The principal investigator (the authorized user) is personally responsible for compliance with University and governmental regulations as they pertain to the use of lasers and non-ionizing radiation sources. Specific responsibilities are listed in the Laser Safety Manual and the Non-Ionizing Radiation Safety Manual, available on the Environmental Health & Safety (EH&S) website.
Department chairs or deans are responsible for providing the resources necessary to control hazards, and establishing the departmental policy and procedures required to comply with pertinent University and governmental standards and regulations.
The Chancellor, acting through the Environment, Health and Safety Policy Committee, and the Vice Chancellor, Research has delegated to the Director of Radiation Safety and the Laser Safety Officer (LSO) the oversight responsibility for campus compliance with standards and policies for laser and non-ionizing radiation safety. The LSO is responsible for the Laser Safety Manual and the Non-Ionizing Radiation Safety Manual. These promulgate safety policy for the use of lasers and non-ionizing radiation sources.
